Tony Conigliaro, nicknamed "Tony C," was a promising young outfielder for the Boston Red Sox. He made his major league debut in 1964 at just 19 years old and quickly became a fan favorite due to his powerful hitting and charismatic personality. In 1965, he led the American League in home runs, becoming the youngest player to ever do so. Tragically, Conigliaro's career was derailed when he was struck in the face by a pitch in 1967, causing severe eye damage. Despite attempting a comeback, he never fully regained his previous form and retired in 1975. Conigliaro's story is one of both triumph and tragedy, a reminder of the fragility of a baseball career and the enduring spirit of an athlete.
